| USMA Prep School Coin | |
The USMA Prep School Coin, which includes the official West Point Crest on one side and the USMAPS unit crest on the other, is presented to each Prep School graduate upon graduation from the Prep School.
The coin was made possible by a grant from the West Point Society of New Jersey and was first presented by the Commandant to Cadet Candidates during graduation exercises on 25 May 1993.
During this initial presentation, COL Jim Orahood, the USMAPS Commandant said The Prep School coin should help keep the graduates focused on what it is theyre doing. He added that the coin was presented to the graduates to help continue the pro-West Point esprit generated during their year at the Prep School. The coin is intended to remind graduates of their proud Prep School heritage and of their future service to our nation.
One of these coins traveled aboard the United States Space Ship Columbia during STS62 from March 4th to March 18th, 1994. LTC Charles D. Gavan, a USMAPS graduate and astronaut, carried the coin during 224 orbits, or 5.8 million miles. The coin is on display in the USMAPS Trophy Room.
The West Point Society of New Jersey continues to support the award of this coin to all Prep School graduates.
